Scarborough Downs Harness Racing
Scarborough Downs was a premier harness racing venue that offered live racing each year during a season that typically ran from March through December. Widely recognized as the largest and most active racetrack in the state of Maine, it featured what was considered New England's fastest half-mile track. Designed by Charles Coon and Sons, the facility earned consistent praise from horsemen and racing enthusiasts for its competitive surface and lively atmosphere throughout its long and fast-paced history.
Located along U.S. Route One in the scenic town of Scarborough, approximately eight miles south of Portland, the racetrack became a well-known landmark in southern Maine. By the time it entered its 52nd year of operation, it had firmly established itself as a staple of the region's sporting and entertainment scene.
It recorded its largest attendance on June 29, 1980, when 9,133 fans filled the grandstand for a thrilling day of harness racing. The track also achieved its highest wagering handle on September 6, 1987, when total betting reached an impressive $507,649 - figures that highlighted the venue's popularity during its peak years.
Scarborough Downs brought its live racing era to a close in November 2018 after facing prolonged financial challenges. Heightened competition from larger casino-supported racetracks in neighboring states, along with shifting gaming laws and reduced wagering revenues, placed increasing pressure on the facility's long-term viability. Although management attempted to keep the venue afloat through simulcasting and adjustments to its racing schedule, those measures were not enough to offset declining income. The shutdown marked the end of more than 60 years of harness racing at the historic Maine track.
